How a law firm works as a business

With Lewis Silkin

Join us on the afternoon of Thursday 19 November for a virtual student event with Lewis Silkin, lifting the lid on how law firms really work as businesses.

How do law firms really make money? What does it take for a modern firm to stand out in a crowded market? Lewis Silkin’s lawyers will explore the commercial thinking behind the legal businesses of today, from fee models and profitability to technology, client relationships, and culture.

The session will kick off with some fundamentals, covering how firms earn revenue, what drives their profitability, and why Lewis Silkin has departed from the traditional partnership structure. The discussion will also explore how the firm invests in offerings beyond core legal advice, including Rockhopper, LS In-house, The Collective, the Future of Work Hub and its AI tool Delphius.

From there, the panel will turn to why law firms invest in legal technology, how innovation is reshaping the work of junior lawyers and what clients really want from their advisers. They will also examine how firms compete for work, not only with each other but with alternative legal service providers.

Finally, the speakers will discuss people and culture, explaining why a firm’s approach to talent is a commercial priority, not just a ‘nice to have’.

Following the presentation and Q&A, attendees will have the opportunity to network with the speakers, Lewis Silkin trainees and members of the firm’s early careers team.

Apply to attend above. You will be asked to submit two questions to the firm.
